BMW and Volkswagen Unveil Major 2026 Electric Vehicle Tech Upgrades

BMW has unveiled an updated electric flagship in its 7 Series, the BMW i7, showcasing significant technological strides derived from its upcoming Neue Klasse cars.

The refreshed i7 features battery improvements with a net capacity increase from 101.7 kWh to 112.5 kWh using sixth-generation cylindrical cells developed with Rimac. This allows two AWD versions — the i7 50 xDrive and i7 60 xDrive — to achieve over 700 kilometers of range (708 km and 707 km respectively) under WLTP standards, with a charging speed of up to 250 kW, cutting the 10-80% charging time to 29 minutes. The top M70 xDrive model delivers 500 kW and 1,015 Nm, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, but its range is slightly reduced to 650 km. The i7 continues to use a 400-volt battery pack despite technological advances.

Design-wise, BMW has refreshed the i7 with a flatter front, new vertical headlights, an illuminated kidney grille, slimmer crystal headlights, and sharper rear lines. The interior incorporates luxe materials such as leather, wood, and crystal glass with enhanced ambient lighting. The new BMW Panoramic iDrive system, powered by BMW Operating System X, improves user experience for drivers and passengers, featuring an 8K-capable Theatre Screen in the rear. Advanced AI-based safety and partial autonomous driving features have been introduced, including hands-free driving on highways up to 130 km/h in select markets. Production aims to prioritize sustainability through renewable energy and recycled materials, with a global launch expected in July 2026 and pricing starting near 1.3 to 1.4 million SEK.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen has launched a new 4Motion four-wheel drive edition of the ID. Buzz electric minibus for the 2027 model year. It delivers 340 hp from dual motors and includes major software upgrades: Connected Travel Assist now automatically brakes at red lights, and an improved one-pedal driving function fully stops the vehicle when released. Battery options include 79 kWh for the standard wheelbase and 86 kWh for the long wheelbase, with towing capacities of 1,800 kg and 1,600 kg, respectively. New Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology provides 2,000-watt output to power external devices.

The updated infotainment system supports app downloads, and a new Candy White/Cherry Red color option will launch May 5. The ID. Buzz Pro 4Motion is positioned above the two-wheel-drive model and below the GTX in price, with official Swedish pricing pending. Market release is anticipated summer 2026, reflecting Volkswagen's push for versatile, tech-forward electric vehicles backed by a €10 billion investment in EV production.
