Blykalla Seeks State Support for New Nuclear Reactors Amid Administrative Scrutiny

Swedish nuclear energy company Blykalla has submitted a government support application to build new nuclear power plants, including a project in Tierp municipality. This marks the sixth nuclear support application received by the government, signaling ongoing efforts to expand Sweden's base power capacity through nuclear energy. Finance Minister Niklas Wykman welcomed the application, noting it reflects the business sector's readiness to invest in essential energy infrastructure and indicates that the governmental support framework is functioning as intended.

Blykalla's applications include plans for six reactors in Norrsundet, Gävle municipality, and eight lead-cooled reactors near Tierp. The estimated combined cost runs into tens of billions of kronor. However, the company is currently under administrative scrutiny after receiving a notice from Bolagsverket regarding issues with its annual report, specifically concerning the timing of the auditor’s report and board approval. Blykalla promptly submitted a corrected confirmation with accurate dates. Marketing Manager Alexandra Teorell expressed confidence that these administrative matters will not influence the government’s technical, safety, and financial evaluation of their support applications.

Financially, Blykalla has reported significant losses over recent years, including a 49 million kronor loss in 2024 and seven capital injections throughout that year. The company is also expanding internationally, having submitted a preliminary application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for operations in the United States.

These developments illustrate Blykalla’s ongoing efforts to establish new nuclear capacity in Sweden, alongside challenges related to corporate administration and ambitious international growth.
