Blykalla Partners with Microsoft to Accelerate Nuclear Licensing Using AI

Swedish nuclear technology company Blykalla is leveraging generative AI and AI agents in collaboration with Microsoft to expedite the licensing and permitting process for its lead-cooled nuclear reactor, SEALER. According to a press release, Microsoft’s Azure-based tools will be deployed to streamline the design, review, and customization of permit documentation to meet regulatory requirements. This innovation aims to reduce the traditionally lengthy documentation process from taking years to only months.

In addition to speeding up the licensing process for SEALER in Sweden, Blykalla is pursuing an application to establish a nuclear reactor park in Norrsundet. This project plans to include six reactors with a total electrical capacity of 330 megawatts. The company is also conducting preparatory regulatory work in the United States as it plans to expand its operations internationally.

This partnership exemplifies the growing application of AI-driven technology to accelerate nuclear energy development, addressing one of the sector’s major bottlenecks—the complex and time-consuming regulation processes. By automating and optimizing document preparation and review, Blykalla expects to significantly shorten the time to market for its advanced nuclear technology, contributing to Sweden’s energy innovation landscape.
