Bittium Strengthens Nordic Defense Communication with NATO-Compatible Systems

Bittium, a leading provider of tactical communication networks, is enhancing NATO's defense capabilities, particularly along the northern front. Under the leadership of CEO Petri Toljamo, who assumed the role in April 2025, the company is focused on fostering Nordic cooperation through advanced communication systems designed for use by land, sea, and air forces.

With over 30 years of collaboration with the Finnish Defense Forces, Bittium has developed a tactical communication network that operates effectively under challenging field conditions. This system, implemented across several European nations including Estonia, Croatia, and Austria, utilizes software-defined radio technology and specialized waveforms resistant to electronic interference and cyber threats. It supports the NATO-compatible ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform, which facilitates interoperable communication among alliance members.

Toljamo emphasized the critical role of technological sovereignty, stating that all development, testing, and assembly occur in Finland or within the EU, which is essential for ensuring supply security amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Bittium is actively pursuing collaborations with the Swedish Defense Forces to bolster Nordic interoperability and mitigate risks associated with disparate technological investments among Sweden, Finland, and Norway. This focus on cooperation is seen as pivotal for effective joint operations.

Founded in 1985, Bittium has grown to employ over 500 individuals and reported revenues of EUR 85.2 million in 2024, extending its expertise beyond military technologies to areas like medical technology and engineering services.
