Axelina Johansson's Historic Year Boosts Sweden's Shot Put Medal Hopes

Axelina Johansson has made history as the first Swedish athlete awarded the Collegiate Women Sport Award in the USA, recognizing her outstanding collegiate career in shot put at the University of Nebraska. This accolade comes after a remarkable 2026 season where Johansson secured a bronze medal at the indoor World Championships in Torun with a throw of 19.75 meters and set a new Swedish record at 19.97 meters.

Johansson is a leading contender for a medal at the upcoming European Championships in Birmingham, scheduled from August 10 to 16, with the women's shot put final on August 10. She currently ranks third in Europe this year and is closely followed by fellow Swede Fanny Roos, making Sweden a strong force in the event. Both athletes have the potential to win Sweden’s first outdoor shot put medal since 1906.

Despite the challenges of a long season and travel fatigue causing some physical discomfort, Johansson remains determined to perform at her best. She credits the establishment of the throwing event performance center in Växjö in 2013 for inspiring a new generation of Swedish throwers, including herself and Roos.

Johansson expressed her excitement about meeting past award winners like world record-holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee, calling the experience inspiring. Her enthusiasm and consistent top-level performance have energized Swedish athletics and raised hopes for a historic achievement in the European Championships.
