Åsa Wiklund Lång, the Social Democratic municipal leader of Gävle, has announced her decision to step down after serving two terms as both municipal councilor and chair of the municipal executive board. In an interview with Gefle Dagblad, she explained that her resignation is a deliberate choice to allow new leadership, stating, "Now it is time for someone else to take over." She highlighted that long tenures in political positions can lead to stagnation, especially in parties with strong local influence.

Wiklund Lång described municipal politics as demanding and close to the public, requiring significant dedication well beyond normal working hours. She noted the practical challenges local politicians face, from navigating inter-party collaborations to dealing with direct public scrutiny and even hostility. Having been involved in local politics for over two decades, she feels the time is right to pass the torch.
