Anna Magnusson Secures Podium and Leads World Cup After Hochfilzen Sprint

Swedish biathlete Anna Magnusson continued her impressive form at the World Cup event in Hochfilzen, Austria, by clinching third place in the women's sprint race on December 12, 2025. Her podium finish not only marked a strong result but also propelled her to the top of the World Cup standings, earning the coveted yellow leader's jersey for the first time in her career.

Magnusson completed the race with flawless shooting and strong skiing, finishing 16.1 seconds behind the dominant winner, France's Lou Jeanmonnot. Norway's Maren Kirkeeide took second place, narrowly edging Magnusson by one second. This result follows Magnusson's recent second-place finish in Östersund the previous week, showcasing her consistent elite performance this season.

In an interview, Magnusson expressed her calmness and confidence during the race, stating, “I feel calm and present in my head all the time even though I am tired. It is going incredibly well right now.” She added, “It’s a dream come true. I really didn’t expect to do this. It’s incredibly exciting, and I’m looking forward to it very much,” reflecting her enthusiasm about wearing the leader's yellow vest in the upcoming pursuit event.

Other Swedish athletes had mixed results in Hochfilzen. Hanna Öberg finished 11th with one missed shot, Ella Halvarsson came in 22nd with two misses, and Elvira Öberg placed 29th with three misses. Additionally, Linn Gestblom returned to individual biathlon competition after a 22-month hiatus, finishing 37th while noting difficulties with standing shooting.

Magnusson’s rise to the top of the World Cup standings—taking over from Finnish athlete Suvi Minkkinen—highlights her breakthrough season and positions her as a leading contender in the biathlon circuit during this early stage of the 2025-2026 season.
