Andreas Palicka Announces International Retirement at 2026 European Handball Championship

Veteran Swedish handball goalkeeper Andreas Palicka has announced his retirement from international play during the 2026 European Handball Championship (EM). The announcement came during Sweden's match for fifth place against Portugal, where Sweden ultimately finished sixth after a narrow 35–36 loss. This match marked the end of Palicka's illustrious career with the national team, spanning 185 international matches and yielding an EM gold medal along with three other medals.

Palicka, aged 39, reflected on his career with pride, expressing gratitude for the support he received throughout his time representing Sweden. He acknowledged that retiring at a home championship felt very special and emphasized that it was time for a new generation to take over. "There is a time and place for everything in life, and to finish at 39 years old with a home championship is very special," he stated in an emotional post-match interview.

The match itself saw Sweden struggle early, conceding eight goals in the first nine minutes, which led to criticism from Viaplay expert Martin Frändesjö, who noted a lack of intensity and competitive spirit, describing the players as almost "jogging home." Despite a halftime score of 16–16 and a milestone with debutant Edwin Aspenbäck scoring his first championship goal, Sweden was unable to secure victory.
