Alstom and Flox Intelligence Launch AI Field Tests to Prevent Wildlife Collisions on Swedish Railways

Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, in partnership with Flox Intelligence, has initiated extensive field tests of an AI-based system aimed at identifying and deterring wildlife from railway tracks throughout Sweden. Approximately 5,000 incidents of wildlife collisions occur annually in Sweden, causing significant operational delays and costs. This new AI technology uses cameras equipped along the tracks to detect animals such as moose, deer, and smaller species in real-time, then emits tailored sound signals to scare them away, reducing the risk of collisions.

Sara Nozkova, CEO of Flox Intelligence, stated that the AI system’s high precision in animal detection contributes not only to wildlife protection but also to increased reliability in rail operations. Maria Signal Martebo, CEO of Alstom Sweden, emphasized the importance of this innovation for enhancing both the safety and sustainability of Swedish rail traffic, noting the surprising volume of animal activity observed during trials.

The project, which is supported by Vinnova and part of Sweden’s broader efforts to achieve safe and sustainable transport systems, moved into its second phase in April 2026. Besides preventing collisions, the AI technology helps improve understanding of local wildlife behavior, allowing for the development of better safety measures.

Alstom’s Innovation Station in Stockholm, established in 2023, serves as the collaboration hub for this project. The initiative aligns closely with Sweden's goals for greener, safer, and more punctual rail services. The AI technology represents a promising advancement in minimizing environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency on Swedish railways.
