Alexander Ovetjkin Makes NHL History as First Player to Score 900 Goals

Alexander Ovetjkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, has etched his name in NHL history by becoming the first player ever to score 900 goals. This historic milestone came during a game against the St. Louis Blues on November 6, 2025, where Ovetjkin scored his landmark goal early in the second period, helping the Capitals secure a commanding 6-1 victory. This monumental achievement follows his breaking of Wayne Gretzky's previous NHL record of 894 goals on April 6, 2025.

At 40 years old, Ovetjkin expressed deep appreciation for the moment, remarking, "All milestones are special moments. But this evening is of course special when you become the first to do it (900 goals)." Despite a slow start to the current season—managing only two goals in his previous 14 games—he remains optimistic about his ongoing career, stating, "I have many games left, so we will see what happens."

Earlier in October, Ovetjkin also celebrated reaching 1,500 NHL games, underscoring his longevity and sustained excellence in the sport. Reflecting on the milestone, he noted, "1,500 games is big, but no one has scored 900 goals. So it will be interesting and it will be a big thing."
