- Only 38% of voters considered party leader debates important for decision-making.
A recent survey by Internetstiftelsen highlights the increasing influence of artificial intelligence on Swedish voters as they prepare to cast their ballots in the 2026 election. According to a study involving 2,142 web interviews conducted between September 17 and 27, about 10% of voters consulted AI tools for guidance on their voting decisions. Of these, one in five reported that AI responses had a significant impact on which candidate or party they chose.
Jannike Tillå, head of societal benefit and communication at Internetstiftelsen, noted that although AI has become a common resource for political information, it has not universally dictated voting behavior. This development signals a shift in how citizens seek and value political advice in an increasingly digital landscape.
The report also underscores the crucial role of social media, particularly Instagram, in engaging younger voters, with over half the respondents underlining the platform as a vital source of political insights. In contrast, traditional political events like party leader debates were viewed as less influential, with only 38% considering them important for their voting decisions.
These findings reflect broader changes in voter engagement methods, where digital channels and AI play a pivotal role, complementing but not fully replacing conventional political discourse.
