Abeba Aregawi Makes Athletic Comeback with Eye on World Championship

Abeba Aregawi, the Swedish athlete, is set to mark her return to competitive athletics in an exciting bid for World Championship qualification. The 35-year-old will compete in the 5,000 meters in Brussels on August 22, just ahead of the qualification deadline for the World Athletics Championships, aiming to achieve a time of 14:50.00 to secure her spot in the championship event.

Aregawi, who has not represented Sweden since 2015, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "I am very glad to compete in both Brussels and Stockholm next week." Her recent journey in athletics has been fraught with challenges; last year she set a new Swedish half-marathon record, which was later invalidated due to doping control complications. Now, having adhered to the necessary protocols, she entered preparations to compete again.

In a recent press release, the Swedish Athletics Federation confirmed her participation and emphasized that Aregawi has been actively communicating with the national team doctor and training centers regarding her preparation for the upcoming races. National team coach Kajsa Bergqvist highlighted Aregawi's commitment, mentioning her systematic communication about her performance and any necessary supplements. Following her race in Brussels, Aregawi is also scheduled to participate in the Finnkampen event, further showcasing her commitment to returning to form in competitive athletics.
