2025 Nobel Prize Festivities Bring Global Laureates to a Colorful Ceremony in Stockholm

The 2025 Nobel Prize festivities commenced on December 10 in Stockholm amid a gray, wintry day that contrasted with the vibrant atmosphere inside the Concert Hall. Around 1,300 guests, including 100 high school students, gathered to honor 14 laureates across six prize categories: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Economics, and Peace.

The event began at 16:00 with an awards ceremony hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf. Laureates, dressed in formal attire or traditional national costumes, received medals and diplomas in a prestigious setting adorned with colorful gowns and floral arrangements. The ceremony featured musical interludes from compositions by Mozart and Copland, and was led by Nobel Foundation Chair Astrid Söderbergh Widding.

Among the distinguished laureates honored were John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for advancements in physics related to macroscopic quantum tunneling; László Krasznahorkai for his literary contributions; and Maria Corina Machado, awarded the Peace Prize for her democracy advocacy in Venezuela, accepted on her behalf by her daughter Ana Corina Sosa.

Following the ceremony, the traditional Nobel banquet will be held in the Blue Hall of Stockholm City Hall, featuring a three-course meal prepared by renowned chefs Tommy Myllymäki, Pi Le, and pastry chef Frida Bräcke. The dress code for the banquet and ceremony mandates full tails for men and long evening gowns for women, with allowance for national folk costumes.
